After my undergraduate degree in 2000, I taught Mathematics and Biology at Senior Secondary School Level. My career in Fisheries started in 2001, when I was offered a job in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Sierra Leone. I was seconded on a World Bank/IMF Project in 2003 for Highly indepted Countries(HIPC) for the construction of fish ponds. A job I held up to September 2003, when I left for postgraduate study.
As a Fisheries Officer, I have been involved in the management and development of Sierra Leone Fishery; in aquaculture, industrial fisheries, artisanal fisheries and inland fisheries . Main duties included supervision of Pond Construction and management, monitoring of fishing activities, enforcement of mesh size regulations, supervision of transshipments at sea, catch data collation and analysis , regulatory assessment of industrial and artisanal fishery and extension services. I have been very active in the enforcement of the Ban on Illegal fishing in both industrial and artisanal sectors. Most of the surveillance patrols for illegal fishing were done along side the Sierra Leone Navy. A work that had to be done under high secret, in order to repremand fishing trawlers , mostly Foreign owned Shrimpers fishing in the Inshore Exclusion Zone(IEZ) and also local artisanal boats fishing in breeding areas of the IEZ.
