Professional Training/skills

Aquaculture,  Fisheries,  biodiversity  and  beach erosion modelling

In the area of aquaculture , I covered courses on  pond construction engineering: earthen and concrete pond designs, shrimp cage construction designs, PVC inlet and outlet sructure controls and  pond stocking and management: stocking density models, feed formulation models, sex reversal techniques in tilapia fish, hatchery and brood stock management. In the  wild fisheries, I have acquired fisheries surveillance training skills from Surveillance Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), Freetown, Sierra Leone in areas of  boarding, navigation of life rafts, GPS and Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS), Rader and map readings,  and scuba diving for under water visual count of fish. Fish stock assessment and statistical packages used includes: FAO-ICLARM Fisheries Stock Assessment tool (FISAT), Ecopath With Ecosim, STATITICA, PC-ORD, and CANOCO.  I also have some background in Ecological modelling ( computer simulations and conceptual models); and mathematical models for beach erosion.

 Laboratory skills

Laboratory skills acquired includes: Otolith sectioning and fish age detrmination, with more advanced techniques were acqured at the Sea Fisheries Department (DVZ) Osstende, Belgium; using otolith cuttetr and stereoscopic microscope coupled to AXioVision3.1 software. stable isotope analysis skill in fish otoliths were acquired from the stable isotope laboratory at VUB, Belgium, using Merchantek micromilling device and MAT252/Kiel  carbonate device; ; Cell microscopy (plankton and fish gonads for maturation studies), spectrophotometry for nutrient analysis, toxicity tests, DNA sequencing and micro-satellite analysis, PCR and gel electrophoresis.

Computer studies and information management

In addition to basic computing skills: in  Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint and Acess, I have acquired training in information retrieval , presentation and recent internet development for information management. For information retrieval, I have used online databases such as Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA), Web of Science, Academic Search Elite,  and other databases accessible through the VUB library. My frequently searched journal is Elsevier Science Direct. I also have background in Website development and the use of photo editing programs including , irfanview , and Adobe Photo Shop.
